Great Himalaya Trail

Stretching 4500kms across the world’s tallest mountain ranges and isolated Himalayan mountain communities makes The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) the longest and highest alpine walking trail in the world. GHT is a network of existing treks and trails offering an incredible diversity in terms of landscapes, flora & fauna, people and culture. The 1700km Nepal section of the GHT traverse the country from east to west and can be a completed by trekking continuously for 157 days. The trail begins near Kanchenjunga on the eastern border and heads west navigating eight of the world’s 8000m peaks, from Makalu to Everest. The trail ends in Humla on the Tibetan border.

Trekking along Nepal’s section of GHT and spending money on food, accommodation or services such as guides, porters and cooks will make a direct difference to communities in these areas. The trail promises incredible places, people & culture- a unique experience altogether. Due to time constraints, man won’t be able to attempt the whole route. So it is broken up into sections and short treks along the trail. Completing a section of the GHT, Nepal trail, will get you a GHT achievement certificate. The following treks interlink to make the Great Himalayan Trail, Nepal.

    Kanchenjunga Trek
Makalu - Sherpani Col / 3 Cols Adventure Trek
    Everest High Valleys Trek
Langtang Trek - Trek to the Sacred Lakes
Manaslu & Annapurna (Manaslu Circuit Trek)
Upper Dolpo & Shey Gompa Trek
    Jumla - Rara Lake Trek
    Tsum Valley Trek

The Great Himalaya Trail is one of the highest and longest trails in the planet. It runs from the east of Nepal to the Far West, and is about 1700 miles. It consists of two trails, a lower one and a higher one. The lower trail is suitable for softer adventure while the higher route is an expedition route in most of the segments.

The Trail is divided into 10 segments, each fitting into one another. The idea is not to get people to do this mammoth three month journey (not many would have the time or the money nor the motivation), but do parts of the trail, and come repeatedly to fill in the jigsaw.

Some of the soft adventure trips that we offer that go into the Trail are presented below. Remember, these are not the only trips possible, so if you have ideas, talk to us!

Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trekking

Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trekking

The Kathmandu Valley Cultural TrekkingTrail is the perfect short trek for those who do not have the time to venture further into the Himalayas. Pack light and head into the forest hills surrounding the valley rim for this culturally rich trek. Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trek displays the best of Nepal’s rural culture, biodiversity and stunning Himalayan views that can be enjoyed with simple preparation and minimal equipment. Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trek begins from Sundarijal, the entrance to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, a watershed only 30 minutes drive from the centre of Kathmandu. Along the way you will be treated to pristine wilderness and diverse ethnic groups living in the unspoiled rural areas, encompassing Nepal’s most popular hill stations: Chisapani, Nagarkot, and Dhulikhel, where various categories of lodges and hotels are available.

The trail is a moderate no fuss trek, with distances lasting six to seven hours each day on mainly undulating terrain with a few long climbs. This is a low altitude trek which does not elevate to more than 2,500m and therefore should not create any problems with altitude related illnesses. You will need a good level of fitness and stamina to complete the full distance. The daily treks can be easily done in individual parts, a day or two at a time with the section(s) of your choice, or as a five day trek. The KVCTT trek can be attempted with or without a guide, as all you need is the itinerary and a good map. However, if you do not want to trek alone you can arrange for a guide or a trekking package from one of Kathmandu’s many registered trekking agencies. The rich tapestry of the cultural heritage of Nepal is synthesized in the Kathmandu valley as well as further closest religious and cultural destination. The ancient cities of the valley – Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur, Kirtipur, Chovar and Dakshinkali represent an epitome of harmony in urban design, elegant architecture and refined culture. The three main historic cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur with numerous, old palaces and place squares, shrines and temples, angles traditions and legends make it a veritable living museum. The Kathmandu valley boasts seven World Heritage Sites UNESCO within a radius of just 20km.
